Laser-Cut Steel — The Structure Behind Every Floating Stair We Build

Every system we build uses a laser-cut steel structure fabricated in our Houston shop. No on-site welding. No apparent welds. No adjustments cut in your home. The stair arrives finished and installs in a day.

At Houston Floating Stairs , every floating stair system we build — cantilevered, mono-beam, or curved — uses a laser-cut steel structure. That structure is fabricated entirely in our Houston shop to your exact field measurements. Nothing is cut on-site. Nothing is welded on-site. By the time we arrive at your home for installation, the steel is finished, coated, and ready to anchor.

We use ASTM A992 structural steel throughout. It's the same grade used in building columns and beams — not the mild A36 steel some fabricators substitute to save cost. A992 has tighter chemistry controls, which means more consistent strength properties across the full length of the beam. For a cantilevered system where the beam carries every load transferred from each tread, that consistency matters. We run the load calculations before any steel is ordered — not after.

Fabrication is laser-cut to your field measurements, not catalog dimensions. If your floor-to-floor height is 118.5 inches with a 7.75-inch rise per tread, that's what gets built. Precision cutting at this tolerance means the stair fits cleanly on the first pass — no site adjustment, no grinding to make it work.

The reason there are no apparent welds on the finished structure is that all connections are made in the shop under controlled conditions, then finish-ground and powder-coated before the piece ships. Powder coat forms a thermoset polymer barrier that seals the surface and resists Houston's humidity, UV intensity, and the temperature swings between outdoor heat and air-conditioned interiors. The finish you see on installation day is the factory finish — no touch-up spraying in your home.

One-day installation is the standard. Because no welding, cutting, or grinding happens at your home, the installation is clean and fast. Our crew anchors the structure, aligns the treads, and completes the system with minimal disruption. Most residential projects are done in a single day.

Laser-Cut Steel Structure — FAQ

Why laser-cut steel for the structure instead of other fabrication methods?
Laser cutting holds tolerances that hand-cutting and plasma cutting can't match consistently. When a stair stringer is cut to within 1/16 inch of the field dimension, it fits the first time. There's no site adjustment, no grinding to close a gap, no shimming. That precision is what allows us to complete installation in a single day without any fabrication work in your home. It's also what gives the finished structure clean edges — no rough cuts, no exposed burrs, no visible tool marks.
Will steel stairs rust in Houston's humidity?
Raw or improperly coated steel will corrode in Houston's subtropical environment. That's why the finish matters as much as the steel grade. We powder-coat all exterior surfaces after full fabrication — no exposed welds, no raw edges. Powder coating forms a sealed polymer barrier that resists moisture penetration. For projects with additional corrosion concerns, we can spec stainless hardware at all connection points.
How long does powder coat last in Houston's climate?
Properly applied powder coat on interior stairs is effectively permanent under normal conditions. For exterior steel stairs exposed to Houston's UV and rain, expect 10–15 years before the finish shows meaningful weathering. At that point, the steel can be cleaned, re-coated, and returned to original condition without replacing the structure. That's one reason steel is often the better long-term value despite higher upfront cost.
How long does steel stair fabrication take?
Fabrication runs 2 to 4 weeks after site measurements are confirmed and the permit package is in review. We don't start cutting until measurements are locked — rushing fabrication on a precision-fit structural assembly produces errors that require on-site correction, which defeats the whole point. The goal is a structure that arrives at your home ready to install, with no grinding or adjustments needed.
What does a laser-cut steel floating stair system cost in Houston?
A residential mono-beam floating stair with laser-cut steel structure, powder coat finish, and wood treads typically runs $24,000 to $45,000 installed, including engineering and permit documentation. Dual-stringer systems, commercial projects, and complex geometries are higher. We give itemized proposals — steel fabrication, tread materials, finish, and installation are broken out separately.
